Seasonal Synastry

Synastry works like transits. If you know how to look at your own chart in motion, if you get used to seeing it overlapped with another chart of another moment that is not the moment of your birth, then you know how to read synastry. Looking at your own chart in relation to someone else’s is about comparing one moment of time with another.

What Sun sign synastry boils down to is seasons. It’s so simple! The Sun changes sign seasonally. It is spring when it is in certain signs and it is winter in others. Looking at someone’s Sun sign in relation to your own chart is like looking at the Sun in a certain season. Your friend, crush, lover, or sister with a Sun sign in a particular season impacts you the way that season impacts you.

Do you feel maladjusted during spring? Does it put social pressure on your reluctant body exiting your winter shell? Does it make you excited to be alive? Make you hunger for sweetness?

Do you sink into yourself during the summers? Do you fumble with a heavy to do list? Do you sleep in or get up early? Do you love the sun or does it reveal your shame? Do you drink jasmine and hide away during the summers or do you sun yourself at the beach in full view of other people’s gazes?

What about the fall? Do you stay indoors or is there a period where you deny the change of the seasons? Do you eat more? Do you crave salt and fat? Do you feel softer or harder? Stronger or more infantile? And the winters? Do you huddle in the cold or do you push your loved ones together through seasonal depression? Do you mother? Are you obsessed with soup? Do you stay up later and find your imagination in the dark? Are you scared of the dark?

And what about your Sun sign synastry baby? Are they a spring baby who strips your defensive pretenses away? Are they a winter baby who reminds you of self protection? Do you crave them like you crave bits of sweetness in the summer or do you crave them like you crave fat for the marrow in your bones like you crave the winter?

Are you afraid of loving your lover in the same way that you are afraid of the winter or the spring? Is it scary to wear less clothes or to wear more? To feel seen or to hide out, committed and invincible?

And you, too, are evidence of your season. If you’re a spring baby, you learned first how to live during the spring. You learned how to survive in the winters or to suffer through the heat of summer. You learned that you can take all of your clothes off or how to button up. You learned to wade through snow or leaves. You learned to keep warm or stay cool. You bring the memory of every solar return to a loved one when you remind them of what your Sun sign means to you.

Sun sign synastry is as simple and as complex as the seasons. The seasons are about change and they’re about presence. You have to notice what they do to you in the same way that you have to notice what a lover does to you to fall in love with them. Love takes just a bit of attention. It doesn’t need much, except in the moments when it feels most hungry, but it needs some.
