Jupiter In Sagittarius: Dogma And Freedom

March 14, 2021, 4:52 p.m.

There’s two types of Jupiter in Sagittariuses that I see—there’s Jupiter in Sagittarius with Saturn in Scorpio born in 1982 and there’s Jupiter in Sagittarius with Saturn in Pisces born in 1994.

Jupiter in Sagittarius is a Jupiter in domicile. It’s a very comfortable Jupiter that takes up a lot of space in a chart. It’s a Jupiter that can’t not be addressed or talked about in a consultation because it influences everything else in a chart.

All Jupiter in Sagittarius people are swept up by movement. Sometimes, this looks like joining a religious or political party, identifying so strongly with the mission of the group that the person works to exhaustion or throws all of their resources into the cause. This is a Jupiter that loves people power so much that it believes, sometimes strongly and sometimes with trepidation, that a gathering of people must be the highest good that there is.

Not all Jupiter in Sagittarius people have experienced movement, community, or mission as comfortable. Sometimes, this is because Jupiter in Sagittarius doesn’t believe in boundaries where there is mission. Other times, it’s because mission alone does not change social relations.

Jupiter in Sagittarius doesn’t like to doubt. It likes to believe.

In the same way that the politics of rage (Jupiter in Aries) or the politics of vision (Jupiter in Leo) can sometimes be exploitative, the politics of belief, Jupiter in Sagittarius, can take over and take advantage. Anyone can tell you that you are right just like anyone can tell you that you are doing a good job but, often, being right or just or good is not the thing that you need.

Jupiter in Sagittarius people born in 1982 are a little more likely to experience Jupiter in Sagittarius as dogma. A lot of the institutions that these people grew up with, often religious, have lived long lives and fallen apart like most institutions do. Having Saturn in Scorpio, Jupiter in Sagittarius people born in 1982 feel controlled by ideology and, in feeling controlled, try to resist.

Jupiter in Sagittarius people born in 1994 have Saturn in Pisces. Saturn has yet to return for this age group so we have yet to see the institutions that they grew up with blew apart. A lot of these people work in the non-profit industrial complex. Saturn in Pisces deals with moral perfectionism.

All Jupiter in Sagittarius people look for freedom. This is the point of Jupiter in Sagittarius—to define and describe freedom.

The thing that Jupiter in Sagittarius must accept, inevitably, is that all mission statements lead to as much disappointment as elation. Disappointment, of self, of community, and of mentors, is a regularly occurring and common part of change. When Jupiter in Sagittarius accepts disappointment, it understands how to work towards freedom without the need to idealize those who act as if they are loftier than air.

The thing is, no one knows more than anyone else. That is not the way that knowledge works. Knowledge does not work to lift some people over others. Knowledge is a shared consensus about what is worth caring about. Knowledge is a vastness and no one will ever own an entirety of it.

When younger, Jupiter in Sagittarius does idealize. It wants to believe that enlightenment is real. It wants to believe that it is possible to transcend the normal by becoming exceptional. However, Jupiter in Sagittarius realizes that this isn’t true freedom and, in realizing this, makes the time and room for everyday acts of revolution.
