i'm so curious about chiron aspects in synastry... like for example, chiron in libra exactly conjunct mercury in libra for another person (and vice versa! so a double conjunction). the superficial gathering is that of painpoints but i feel like there is more that my limited knowledge cant elucidate. or chiron-sun..??

Oh, man. You’ve given me something to write about that is a bit controversial in astrology. This controversial thing is the subject of Chiron in aspect.

I’m not one of those traditional astrologers who don’t use anything but traditional planets. I do use Chiron and I’ve noticed that Chiron has an impact. I’ve noticed that it tends to impact Saturn.

The question of Chiron in synastry—that’s a little more complicated. You see, Chiron is a very slow moving comet. It moves slowly, sometimes slower and sometimes faster, and somewhat close to the pace of Saturn. Sometimes, it moves much slower than even Saturn. It spends eight years in Aries and Libra.

If you are looking at someone whose Chiron is conjunct your Mercury and that person is around the same age as you, then you will also have Chiron conjunct your own Mercury in your natal chart. It’s somewhere between Saturn, which you share with your age group, and Uranus, which you share with your generation.

If you don’t have the same Chiron as someone, this is a marker of generational difference. That’s why intergenerational relationships have all of these other layers that relationships between people of similar ages don’t have. Intergenerational relationships bring in all of these generational planets.

This is my interpretation of Chiron. You look at it with family members who are of different generations than yourself and you see where it all lines up. Someone with an evolutionary lens might treat Chiron as a key that circulates between the personal and the collective. Someone with more of a modern lens might treat Chiron as those pain points that you mentioned.

For me, I like to think of Chiron as Saturn’s knot of stiffness. It’s where all of the Saturn tension is carried. You feel Saturn through Chiron. If you have Chiron Libra, I’m guessing that your Saturn is somewhere close to Aries or Pisces. This Libra Chiron is the knot in Saturn’s back.

I have to be honest—I don’t see Chiron being conjunct Mercury as being too important in synastry. It’s such a generational thing. Everyone you meet who is around the same age will have Chirons that impact your chart in a similar way. If you want to know more about the Chiron aspect, get to know more about how you interact with and feel with a that certain age group.

I think house placements, receptions created or not, and the overall direction of two charts tell a lot more about synastry. You don’t have to be super compatible with elements or aspects to date. What you do need, however, is for the charts to tell the same story.

But your question was about Chiron in synastry. Look at other people with the same age. Ask them questions about their Saturns and try to find the knot. Talk about how you relate to the tension of Saturn. Have those conversations and you might find something that I have no idea exists.
